Doser is so much easier I haven't check my parameter for a while since my sps are growing very well AI is nice but it can only cover 24x24 at the most and very expensive

Thought I'd give a little update. My doser has been online for about a month and its so easy I can't believe I waited so long to switch. I'm currently dosing about 110 mL per day and I purchased 5L containers which should last me 45 days. All my parameters are stable for a change. I also figured out that I needed to replace my rodi membrane. The chloramines in tap water get broken down into ammonia and chlorine. The chlorine gets trapped by the carbon, but the ammonia doesn't get caught until the di portion. My membrain was letting too much stuf through so my di wasn't capturing all of the amonia, thus I've been adding amonia to my tank for the last several months. I even measured it in the top off water. Anyway problem solved. Hopefully I'll get back to growing coral instead of preventing them from dying. We'll see Finally, my ai lights are coming today and thanks to lawrence's generosity, I have a reefkoi G2 light as well to borrow. So i can compare 400w MH to RK to AI. Should be interesting.
I'll let you know how it goes. Jeff

Very cool Jeff! Can't wait to see your tank with the new lights. And that's scary about the tap water. Eesh. I'll have to check the water I am using.

Tank has been down for about 2 months now. Its been a nice break, but I'm starting to dream about the next set up. I've made some mods to my sump and plumbing. I purchased 150 lbs of dry rock from CFM and sand from Marco Rocks that should arrive this Friday. Hopefully I will have the tank running again in a couple weeks. If I get a chance I'll try to take pics. Jeff

Jeff. Where do u live close to? LADWP does not use chloramine in the tap. I actually went out and spoke to the some supervisor at the water treatment center. I was told they might have had a spike in chlorine since their systems are so outdated. But they start using chloramine in the water starting 2014. He also added the best type of water purification is good carbon and a good R.O. unit. Only reason I did some homework on it was because I was on brs getting ready to order some new filters when I spotted the new chloramine filters, so before making a purchasing decision, I decided to go on a fieldtrip to lawdp.

Hey Dee, that's interesting news. I've only gone off of their report that they publish listing there water quality. From what it says, they are and have been adding chloramine to the water. Apparently they started switching over from all chloringe a few years ago. But maybe that doesn't apply to the whole valley. Not sure and the report is a little difficult to understand. This just adds to the mystery though. I still have no idea why my tank had problems. Every time I thought I had it figured out everything would start dying again. I've used a good RODI with tons of carbon for most of the last 2 yrs and still had problems. Seems like there have been some others in the valley with problems too. Wish someone would figure it out.

I honestly think there is something in the water that they are not telling us about. For example, I know there are higher levels of mercury in our tap water than there should be. Even VIVID's aquarium was having issues with water, to the point they sent their water to get tested at a lab. The results of the water test showed nothing out of the ordinary.
The report does in fact indicate parts of LA County, but I was told the SFV does not yet use chloramine, and when they do begin, they will send out notices.

Detane, Soo what your saying is we will have to get our water elsewhere or get the new chloramine filters in our water systems when they start putting chloramine into our water? Im wondering if the flouride they put in the water has any adverse affects on our tanks?

Im wondering if the flouride they put in the water has any adverse affects on our tanks? Dont mean to derail the Jeff's thread, but maybe flouride is in fact the cause of some reef crashes this year. Chefzilla, exactly, once they begin using chloraimes we in fact need to boost our carbon, or use chloramine filters. Flouride has all kinds of negative heath related issues to living organisms. It is a bi-product of aluminum, so highly toxic it is illegal to dump it into or near water sources, but our local government deems it ok to add it to our water supply without proof of its dental benefits. Fluoride was originally experimentally used by Nazis on the Jewish work camp population. They found it caused all types of cancers, made the population more docile, and shortened life expectancy. There is no proof that it strengthens tooth enamel. That was all propaganda to find a way to get rid of the bi-product. Sorry Jeff. I should have posted this on a separate thread.

Its good discussion. Keep it going. I wish some one would figure out the water issue too. I think when I read the water quality report that the DWP wasn't adding flouride to the water any more. On a different note, when I fill my tank I'm thinking about purchasing ocean water to do it. There is a provider out here that will deliver up to 300g of ocean water. Its been used often for reef tanks, but it will be more expensive that making my own. I'm afraid if I start with my own I'll have the same problem all over again.

As long as its collected far from the beach it's ok but you have to go slow adding corals I don't trust scrips water either.
