Name: Mike Other Screen Names: Reefcentral - cngh; Nano-Reef - coolnamegoeshere. Location: Toluca Lake Aquariums: 40br mixed reef with 6x39w t5 tek light, BM NAC3+ skimmer, Vortech MP20 for flow, diy pvc overflow to ~22g sump; NC24 fni 4x24w t5 and 9002 doc skimmer. About me: weekend duffer/hacker, socal native most recent FTS from about a month ago: i need to start mounting stuff so it doesn't look like a frag smorgasborg. recent equipment additions: -BRS dual reactor - this thing is awesome- bryopsis and nuisance algae disappeared in a couple weeks after adding it. -BM NAC3+ skimmer - works pretty well, no major complaints except for it's really noisy maintenance regimen: -none really. i dosed kent tech-m for a couple weeks to battle the bryopsis, but it really disappeared rapidly once i had the BRS up and running. i think it bleached some of my corals, but they're slowly coloring back up. i was also dosing mb7 during this time, but have stopped b/c i ran out. -water change (approx. 5-8 gallons) every 2-3 weeks using scripps water from aquarium works -lighting - 7 hours under 3 blue+, kz fiji purple, ge 10k, pure actinic. i think i will change out the ge 10k b/c it makes things too yellowish. all my test kits are a couple years old so i haven't tested no3, no4, po4, pH, ca, mg in months, if not close to a year.

Looks nice Mike. I like the minimal maintenance routine. Seems to be working out for you, and it makes me look like a chump for spending as much time as I do with my tank... BTW: I work in Glendale, just a stone's throw from TL...good to have a neighbor reefer...

(like yours do...your stuff is pretty damn awesome! ) glendale is super close...i drive by on my way to/from work in DT. i'll have to snap a more recent pic to upload... one of these days, haha.

richard, here's a pic of that acan we chatted about that i got from aquarium city: and a pic of the "garden" - still a work in progress : pic of my mystery wrasse. in the background you can see a super faded sps/monti. it should be like a shamrock green.

Lookin good! Your Acan garden is ridiculous! Unfortunately my mystery wrasse jumped out of the tank. I was stupid for thinking that it wouldn't if I get another one I will build a rim for the tank.

aw man! sorry to hear about the wrasse! mine jumped out once a long time ago, but i was lucky... i was in the room and heard some rustling in some papers on the floor near the tank. looked in the papers, and there was my mystery wrasse! was coated in fuzz and carpet fibers. crazy fool! i freaked and just put him back in the tank right away and he sank to the bottom and kinda drifted under some rocks... was a couple days before i saw him again. but he recovered- that was more than a year ago and he's been a champ since.

Do you put a lid on your tank? I am thinking about making an acrylic rim for my tank so that hopefully it will prevent my future mystery wrasse from jumping out. Do you think that will be enough? Also do you think your wrasse learned it's lesson after it jumped out that time? Maybe I can train a new wrasse that way...

hey richard, sorry for the delay in responding... been super busy w/ work the last few weeks, every weekend for about the past 6 weeks has been taken up w/ some activity, plus just now getting over a nasty cold. and the tanks been having new problems (b/c of neglect from work/activities and being sick)...plus my mystery wrasse croaked ... ugh. anyway, to answer your question: i did use the IO reef food, specifically the gel pack stuff. I don't have grazers, so i haven't used the grazing discs. i don't think the gel food went over very well. the fish ate it, but not enthusiastically. i'll try it again but i don't think i would go out of my way to buy it. if you (or anyone else) has some grazers, i can give you the grazing discs to try out, b/c right now i have nothing that will eat it.

Eeeps sorry about the Mysteri wrasse . Figures as much with the gel food. But I haven't tried it yet. Could I get the seaweed disks? I want to try it out for my purple tang. Oh and are you coming to the next meeting? We will be giving out reef munchies samples. I am using it now for my fish and they all seem to love it. It is very high quality food. You can tell just by looking at it and smelling it.
