anyone growing/raising their own live brine shrimp? the stores DIY kits make it seem so easy. is that accurate? for those of you who do grow/raise their own BBS, how do you make them nutritious for your fish? seems when they're first hatched they're tiny tiny... i don't see how they can be nutritional. i'm curious to hear first hand experience. if it really is as simple and hassle-free as the products make it seem, i may give it a try... maybe

Mike, They are simple to raise them. They are very nutritious when they first hatch because they have the "yolk" still attached to the body. Yes they are small but are good for your fish. Full of vitamins. Trust me, If you add them to your tank right after they are hatched your fish will go crazy! Theres nothing like live food BUT they loose their nutritional value after 12 hours cause they absorb the yolk. Hope this helps :-)

I feed the live brine shrimp SELCON, to make them a little more nutritious. While in the refrigerator I add it in a cup full of brine shrimp at least 3 hours before I feed them to the tank.

Brent did you start growing the Brine Shrimp yet? I might give it a try also. Im looking for a nice LED light to use instead of a regular light bulb.

I have grown them before when i was trying to raise my clownfish fry... I havnt done it in over a year. They are SIMPLE to raise. Made my contraption out of 3 1 liter bottles.. Bottom cut off, a hole drilled thru the cap and air line tubing than siliconed so it wont leak. Its better if you "decapsulate" the eggs in bleach before you put them in water to hatch them. That way you dont get the egg casing and you can simply put them in the water as food. And with a led light you kinda want the heat that the regular light bulbs produce to help "incubate" the eggs :-)

I took 2 5 gallon buckets and attached then with bulkheads. Then i added a air stone to one side and a light to the other. I add the eggs to the bubbly side and covered it to make it dark. The eggs hatch and the brine shrimp swim to the light on the other bucket. Leaving the egg shells back on the bottom of the dark side. I then feed them with green water from my pond.
Seems to be working great! Tons of babies and no cysts in the lighted side.
