I am planning on doing Whitney too. Sometime in the late fall. I have heard from others that do it to train hiking at altitude, like Baldy or some of the higher local mountains.

@paul, I guess you are going outside of the permit dates? I am still waiting for the permit approval which will be in April.
Yes, we have already hiked Mt. Pinos (highest peak in Ventura Co. 8,847 ft) and Sawmill Mt (highest peak in Kern Co. 8.818 ft).
We plan to climb, Mt. Baldy, Mt. San Jacinto and San Gorgonio when the snow melts.

Whitney 5 years ago with my dad, before his knees gave out. It is great hike. didn't make it to the peak because I am no rock climber lol But we hiked it for the fishing. Thousands of lakes and rivers, it is just beautiful. My dad and I have a lake up there that we found by accident. It is really small and completely hidden. We named it Fishermen's Dream because when the sun is about to go down all you can hear is the trickling of the water and native trout jumping. We pull out 5-6 pound Brook Trought from there. You will enjoy the hike. I would love to hike all of John Muir's trail from Lone Pine all the way to Yosemite but i got a tank to baby sit.

ReeVo, there's no rock climbing involved with hiking Mt. whitney. Anyways I finished the hike in one day last year 8/3/11. Just finished hiking San Gorgonio Mtn in one day on 11/11/12. It's highest peak in Southern California at 11,501 ft. Anyone interested in some hiking?
