Cool, just catching up with this. Let me know when you go. I'm getting the bug and starting to think about trying our west fork of san gabriel again. I went to the west fork in October of last year and it was terrible. No fish, low water and a terrible smell for at least 2 miles back. I haven't been to piru creek for years, but I heard that it was terrible due to the way they were dealing with the water flow from the damn to protect some frog species. If you go there let me know how it is or maybe I can join you. Really tiny creek though. Wouldn't mind try cespe creek in Ventura soon too. Closer to me. For anyone interested in learning Fly fishing there is a club in the san fernando valley called sierra pacific fly fishers and they are starting their yearly beginners clinics (free) which ends with an organized trip to the sierras.
Ok, getting to long, Richard, hit me up the net time you want to head out. Jeff

Haha yeah I took the Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers course when I was in high school. They took us to Piru Creek for the "graduation" but I don't know if they still do that. I haven't heard anything about them in a while.
I will probably be going up to Piru Creek some time next week. I am actually going to catch crawfish but I will bring a fly rod or tenkara rod just in case. From what I've seen of Piru recently is that there is pretty much no action during the day and then around sunset 5:30ish there is a rise for 20-30 minutes. During the rise you'll catch lots of small trout. Around 3-7 inches. I know the pools where they rise.
I also went to the west for a couple weeks ago with my dad to try out his new tenkara rod. We found some rises but the water was low. I caught a 2 inch trout haha and he got a 6 inch one.

The SPFF club now plans a trip to Mammoth as a fist outing for newbies. Its really fun. Don't have to be new or probably even a member. Once up there, there is a schedule of guided trips everyday. You can join any of them. I went 2 years ago after having fly fished for over 15 yrs and learned a ton. The best part is there's no cost for the guides.
Let me know if you plan on going. If you give me a couple days I might be able to get sick and have to miss work or something. Water is probbly still too cold to get much action. Jeff

Do they go during the winter? From their website it seems they won't be doing that until April. I was planning on making a trip to the Kern. And I wanted to explore Piru some more.

They just had a small weekend trip to Bishop over this last weekend. But the big trip to Mammoth isn't until the summer. The next several months have fly fishing classes on the weekends culminating in this trip. But anyone can attend the trip. Have never been to kern, but have heard its really good especially if you are willing to hike. Let me know if you head back to piru creek. Jeff

Always interested in fishing. Haven't fished for bass since I was a kid and have not idea how to and not a big fan of lake fishing. But always up for learning. You talking about shore fishing or from a boat? Jeff

Hey Jeff I go to Piru quite often now actually so if you want to go just let me know when you are available. I found a pretty sweet pool under a broken concrete waterfall. Lot's of top action starting around 4:30. I'm sure some nymphs would work during the day as well. All small fish but lots of fun.
I was using my Dad's Tenkara rod and it was a blast.

Cool, I will. Do you fish up from the lot or just walk up to the pool?

I just go to the pools. I don't think there is any point in fishing up the stream. Most areas have no fish or micro fish. The population seems to have declined and concentrated in the larger pools.
